Fall Fashion Challenge: How to Style Your Summer Pieces for the Chilly Season

Posted: Aug 29 2014 by Lookbook Store

When it comes to finding new ways on how to wear things you already own, we fashionistas always try our knack to think outside the box for the sake of getting more from our existing wardrobe.

Now that the high summer season has transitioned to autumn, we’re back again to another fashion challenge. That is, to put our favorite summer pieces into good use this chilly season. If you're like many of us here at Lookbook Store, we're pretty sure you don’t want to pack away your favorite floral dresses for safe keeping or push your kimonos way into the back of your closet just yet. So with that in mind, we thought we'd share to you some styling tips on how to make  your favorite summer pieces work this autumn.

1. Floral Dresses

Bright floral dresses can brighten a dull, gloomy day in the fall, so they're great to wear if you need to lift your mood once in a while. To style them, here's what you can do:

  • Throw on a jacket or cardigan on top of a floral dress. This helps toughen the feminine look and keep you warm at the same time. Also, adding different outwear pieces makes the dress more seasonally appropriate.
  • Add cold-weather wear, like tights or leggings, scarves or beanies with your dress. Wearing one of these pieces is one of the easiest ways to transform a summery dress into an autumn one.
  • Choose colors and textures appropriate for fall to accentuate the dress. Opt for darker and bolder hues for an edgier autumn look.

2. Kimonos

Kimonos jackets are known to be summer staples but that doesn't mean you can no longer wear them in the fall. Such jackets with foliage prints can fit right in the fall, wherein they can add color to your wardrobe. To style them, here's what you can do:

  • Pair your kimonos with jeans and booties for a friendly, casual look.
  • Belt it over jeans and pair it with tall boots. This looks glam even if you're at home.
  • Belt your kimono over a dress and match it with a pair of opaque tights and slouchy booties for an edgy girly girl style.

3. Ripped Denims

Denim jeans and shorts are versatile pieces so you can wear them all year round. But if they're ripped, causing cold air to seep in, try these tips:

  • Team it with dressier pieces, like leggings, stiletto booties and fur coats.
  • Throw on a blazer over your long-sleeved blouse and add a beanie for a tough chic look. And bring your distressed denim jeans or shorts up a notch by wearing thigh-high boots or tights.
  • Layer it up with oversized open cardigans to keep the skin-showing denims seasonably suitable and chic.

4. Crop Tops

Although wearing them in the fall can be a challenge, it's still possible. Here are some ideas you can try:

  • Opt for tailored pants as form-fitting bottoms can be too casual and too summery. You may also wear a high-waist A-line skater skirt or a maxi skirt to go with crop tops. The former can keep your exposed belly area warm, provided that tights are worn for your legs, while the latter can keep your middle and lower body warm.
  • Leather skirts or pants are also a great way to keep you warm. Be sure that their high-waisted, though.
  • Another option is to wear your tank tops like you would with vests. You may toss a form-fitting blouse or shirt underneath your tank top, but this should only be done with wisdom. Some crop tops may not look great if worn like a vest while others can.

So you see? Even if it's fall, you can still wear your summer staples. Just add cold-season appropriate pieces to keep you warm throughout the coming months.
